An all-inclusive Guide to Acquiring a Domain Name For Your Business

Selecting your domain name is equally a huge task as choosing your website name. Many businesses venture within the same niche and your preferred names may have already been registered. What this means is that you must either try and re-select your name and re-check if the equivalent domain is free to register, or that you register a less well-known domain extension.
A domain name is simply another name for your website URL, or website address. There are many companies out there that offer countless domain name registry services at affordable prices, however today’s article will not dwell on this this article.

This article will look at the following aspects of choosing a domain name for your website:-

  • Choosing your website’s name
  • Choosing your domain name’s extension (.com, .net, .org, .ke etc.)
  • Where to register your domain
  • Protecting your domain

Choosing your name:-

It is important that your website name suits your site’s topic area. Start by securing the exact name of your business, preferably in.com format, be cautious of websites/trademarks with similar names to your chosen name. A quick search on WHOIS will give the status or the availability of your chosen name.

Things to also consider include:-

  • Try to keep your domain name as short as possible.
  • Use straight forward, catchy, relevant and precise keywords for your business.
  • Avoid trademarks in your name, as you don’t need the liability.
  • Avoid hyphens in your domain name, not unless you happen to be in a region that accepts it i.e. Germany.
  • Avoid numerical digits in the domain name for its often confusing.
  • Use a simple domain name that you will not have to spell out.

Choosing your domain name extensions:-

The domain extension (.com) is the most popular, and for this reason there is a chance that the.com version of your chosen name is already taken. In such a case, you must either entirely choose another website name or opt to register your domain name with the other available options i.e. (.net, .org, .info etc.). However, I would not recommend this because it makes it relatively hard for clients to find you and search results would most likely be of the one with the .com extension.
The quality of your website content is much more important than the domain extension you choose. If your website target audience is region based, then countries have their own top level domain know as country code top level domains. A good example, Kenya has (.ke).

Where to register your domain:-

It is important to note that for ease of convenience, many website hosting companies allow you to register domain names through them. However, it is recommended to register your domain name separate from your hosting provider, this gives you more control if you ever prefer to move your domain or host.

Protecting your domain:-

If your business is mainly online, then protecting your domain should be considered as a basic security measure i.e. ensure your domain is secure to prevent your domain from being moved and that your contact information is kept up to date for easier contacting for you renewal. Be mindful and make sure the password of your e-mail address is secure.
It is my belief that the above information will assist in making an informed decision.  Soft web masters offers domain registration and hosting services, at affordable prices.
